I spent some time with the brilliant Dr Matthew Boente last week, discussing among other things mental wellbeing, on which he is an expert at. Dr Boente had some great tips which he offers his patients who are struggling with their mental health, and I wanted to pass them on to you guys, so that you can find some help when you are also struggling. To be clear here, we are not talking abut mental illness, just those people who are struggling with anxiety or feeling overly stressed. If you are feeling that way, here are some tips which may lift you up a little and get you back to 100%.
Meditation
Meditation is a great technique which you can use to help improve so many aspects of your life. Through meditation you can reduce stress and anxiety and also increase performance. To meditate you simply need to take 15 minutes out of your day, find a quiet area and take a seat on the floor, sitting comfortably and upright. Close your eyes and just take deep breaths focusing your mind on your body and how you feel, don’t force relaxation here, just keep taking those deep breaths and after a few tries you’ll learn to sit back in your mind and enjoy the experience.
Exercise
Exercise is not just good for your physical health, it is also something that can help you reduce your stress levels and increase your overall happiness. Not only does feeling good about your body help us to be more confident, exercising also helps release endorphins around the body which are these feel good chemicals that help all aspects of the body and the mind. Go for a run, lift some weights, whatever you feel most comfortable doing, and do it for 30 minutes per day.
Sleep
Dr Boente was telling me that one of the most common reasons why people feel under pressure or overly anxious often comes down to the amount of sleep which they are getting, and the quality of that sleep. You should be getting between 7 and 9 hours of high quality, deep REM sleep each and every night. In order to make sure that you get that good sleep, it is important that you have a routine and that you sleep at the same time each night. Don’t eat too late and avoid tech before be in order to get some great sleep and feel better about yourself.
Talking
One of the most important things that you can do with regards to your mental wellbeing is to talk about it with your family and your friends. It is important that you are able to create this environment with your friends or family because they will also benefit from discussing their mental wellbeing. Talking about your problems is the way to find solutions and make sure that you feel better about yourself.
Follow these easy tips and see if you can give yourself the boost that you need.
