Eugene Bernshtam and I have been discussing a lot about the Premier League of late, as we near towards the end of another season. Normally Eugene and I disagree on most topics when it comes to football, but on the subject of player of the season, we have surprisingly agreed. This season has been a strange one because Liverpool have ran away with it so early, that it actually feels a bit like a damp squib. Nonetheless, there is still much to play for in the top 4 places, so the season isn’t totally over. The player of the season trophy has to go to a Liverpool player, and here are who we think may be in line for it, and who we think will win it.
Trent Alexander Arnold
Trent has been sensational this season and he just continues to get better and better at Liverpool’s right back position. Not only has Trent improved his defending this year, something which some questioned him about last year, he has also upped the ante when it comes to assists, notching up 12 already with 10 games left of the season. This kid is sensational and he’ll only continue to get better.
Sadio Mane
Liverpool have rarely looked convincing this year, which is strange given their table position, but whenever they have needed that little bit of magic, that something special to get them out of a hole, Sadio Mane has been there. Mane has a ridiculous engine and the amount of games which he has played is just incredible, to maintain that level for such a long time is so impressive and he forms a key part of the Liverpool attack.
Roberto Firmino
Firmino is the unsung hero of this Liverpool team, mainly because he doesn’t get that many goals or assists as an attacker. The role that Firmino performs however should not be overlooked, he is the glue that holds the attack together and everything goes though him. Firmino scores his fair share of goals, and they are usually crucial ones. Without Firmino Liverpool look less potent, and that is the mark of the man.
Jordan Henderson
For Eugene and I it should be Jordan Henderson who takes this award, he has been everything that Liverpool have needed in a midfielder and a captain. In fact you only have to look at the last few weeks when Henderson has been out to see what a miss he is, with Liverpool losing three on the bounce. Henderson is a big voice in the dressing room and he is certainly a big game player. Henderson represents everything that is good about Liverpool and that is why he should be the one who takes the player of the season trophy, anyone else would be an injustice.
Who do you think should win the award? Should Kevin de Bruyne get a look in? Let us know in the comments below.
