With a background in digital marketing, Arshad Madhani has experienced a good amount of success so far in his life. He recently gave us a little bit of time to talk about success. So many people are striving for success, and his insight can be helpful for a lot of people out there, no matter where they are individually at this moment.
In Your Own Words How Do You Define Success?
I think success can be defined as meeting goals and expectations people put on themselves. In some ways, success is also about exceeding expectations. People always need to be putting together goals to keep themselves motivated, and this is how success can come to be. Only the individual will truly know if something is successful or not.
How Do You Believe Success is Measured?
We are all our toughest critic. There have been times where I feel like I have not had success, even though others may feel like I did enough to warrant it being labeled a success. The only person who you really need to put full effort in for is yourself.
Success when working for a company can also be defined for obvious reasons. They are going to put together goals that need to be met or a person might not be able to hold on to their job in the long term. Also, promotions, salary increases, and the like all are part of corporate success. For those like me not in the corporate world, it can be gaining new clients, clients referring you to other clients, stuff like that!
Growing Up, What Did You Believe Success Was?
Honestly, my goal growing up was to not only go to college, but have success at that level. I knew that college was something that was not automatically given, so I put forth as much effort as possible to get there.
I’ve learned throughout my life that college is not the only way to have success. In fact, quite a few people in the digital marketing field do not have any formal education. Just growing up in the era of the Internet has allowed them to pretty much teach themselves. To me though, college was always the safest route and the one I wanted to focus on to lead to success later on.
Has Your Definition of Success Changed Over Time?
Everyone’s definition of success should always be evolving as time goes on. Whenever goals are met, the next step is to focus on the goals after that. Life is really just a bunch of different tests throughout time, so the definition should always be changing.
If there is any constant, it is just providing that challenge. Successful people will always be able to keep themselves motivated.
Share a Time You Deemed Yourself Unsuccessful at Something
I was actually not very successful when I built my very first website. I tried it to figure out a lot on my own, and it ended up being a total disaster. I actually had to pay someone to help me get out of the mess, which is frustrating to admit to even to this day.
How Did You Recover From That?
I realized that work need to be done for me to be as self-sufficient as possible. I really did not want to have to rely on a lot of other people when I was first starting out. I wanted to be able to take a project and go from beginning to end.
Recovering from that would be a lot easier these days, because there are a lot of resources for people to learn things for free. Don’t be afraid to ever ask questions, and certainly do not be afraid of failing occasionally. Even the very best people out there had to fail a few times before they could have the success they wanted.
