If you want a career in the theater, as a singer, dancer or actor then going to a performing arts school is certainly your best chance to build a solid foundation for this type of career. Shortly before leaving high school I applied to a number of performing arts schools and I was absolutely beside myself when I discovered that I had been accepted to AMDA College and Conservatory of the Performing Arts. This school proved to be the making of me in more ways than one and so I wanted to talk a little today about the truth behind studying at a performing arts school.
Intense
Studying at a school like this is incredibly intense and I can assure you that any hopes you may have for a vibrant social life or a second hand job may very quickly go out of the window. Because you will study a wide variety of disciplines within performing arts you will have a huge amount of learning and practice to do. When there is an important event coming up, which seems to be monthly, you will have to work tirelessly on your performance whilst you are still studying. It will require a huge amount of hard work and organization which is why only a select few make it through.
Brutal
You will go through incredibly brutal highs and lows during your time at a performing arts college, from the elation of landing a role to the heart-shattering low grade which you received in another class. Beyond this the competition is incredibly tough and you need to be ready for the fight. There is only 1 role which 30 people want which of course breeds competition, not to mention the fact that this is a world of over-confidence and creative expression. The students want to move past you, the teachers want the absolute most from you in terms of your body, mind and soul, and you will have no doubt placed some goals in there for yourself. The overall experience of a performing arts school is absolutely amazing but getting through it can be a brutal and savage journey.
Eye Opening
It doesn’t matter how many plays you have been in or how many dance routines you have been a part of, when you get to a performing arts school you really begin to learn about this world. We had a teacher who worked on Broadway and who would often take us to some of the stages there, she taught with raw discipline and she would recount amazing tales and stories of theater shows throughout the ages. Whatever you think you know before beginning a performing arts course is absolutely wrong and when you start studying with these amazing men and women, you will have your eyes opened to this fun, tough, challenging, rollercoaster of a world.
